Chapter 37 – Let’s start working as department chief!!

Kalin starts telling me more about this position of chief of the alchemy department.

Having that said, what I have to do isn’t going to change that much.

I have to solve problems in the camp that can be solved with alchemy, and transmute magic crystals.

I also receive permission to continue my basic research, which was put on hold, and hear more about my budget and what I have to clear with Kalin.

I can do pretty much anything I want with my budget within reason, but for some reason she also tells me ‘this is because I trust your good judgment, but make sure to report what you’re using and why to accounting’.

And then, I’m handed my first task in this new position.

“I want you to gradually increase the personnel of the alchemy department, and eventually have it function as an independent organization.

Think about a name for it too.”

And that’s the end of Kalin’s announcement.

A name… I don’t want one that’s too close to the alchemist association.

That’s an organization under the direct control of the country anyway.

I should give it a name that makes it clear it’s a part of the Admiral dominion.

Or maybe something related to my own alchemy.

Hm…

I think as I walk back to my tent.

I’m not going to reach a decision right away, and there’s not rush, so I’m going to focus on what I can do now and prepare to tackle my first job as the official chief of the alchemy department.

“Master Rust, we are coming in.”

Says Ahri, before herself and Roa come into my tent.

I sent out a message that I want to examine them, and hopefully solve the problem Ahri told me about.

Roa seems fidgety.

Now that I think about it, back when she was bringing in patients she was also constantly looking around the tent.

She’s probably looking at Rose through her magic eye that can see through things.

Rose’s vines are intricately entangled, but also completely covered, so it must be very interesting to see through her eye.

I ask them to sit down, and Rose responds to my voice, creating two places for them to sit with its vines.

Roa again looks very interested.

I wait for them to sit, and start speaking.

“Well then.

I want to examine both the flow of magic elements in your eyes, and the function of those magic cloths suppressing them.”

“Understood.”

“Yes.”

“First, wrap this sealing scroll around your eyes.

This will seal your magic eyes completely.

In the meantime, I will do a simple examination of your magic cloths.”

I say while showing them a palm-sized scroll.

It’s just wide enough to cover their eyes.

“Who will go first”

Asks Ahri.

“Let’s start with Roa.

Ahri, from what I’ve heard, your magic eye puts a bigger strain on your body.

Removing that magic cloth you always have on comes with bigger risks too, right”

“That’s good.”

Says Roa before Ahri can respond.

“Roa… Very well.”

“Wrap this scroll around Roa’s head, in a way that covers her eyes.”

I say while giving the scroll to Ahri, who carefully takes it.

“Let’s begin Roa.”

“Yes.”

Ahri starts slowly opening the scroll, and places it behind the cloth covering Roa’s face.

Roa helps her, and they wrap the scroll around Roa’s head.

“It is done.”

Says Ahri.

“Then let’s start.

《Seal》.”

The light of magic elements runs through the scroll, and with a smooth sound, the scroll sticks itself to Roa’s face.

“You can let go.

How do you feel Roa”

There is silence for a few seconds.

“…I can’t see anything.

Completely dark.”

She whispers quietly.

“It looks like the scroll is working properly.

Ahri, remove Roa’s magic item.”

Ahri removes it slowly, and now that it’s only Roa’s eyes that are covered by the scroll, I can see her face.

I try to make sure the scroll is well wrapped, when I notice something.

There are two smudges on the edges of the scroll, and two clear lines start running down Roa’s cheek.

“Roa!”

Says Ahri, sounding very worried.

“I don’t have to see anything.

Everyone’s like this, right Ahri”

I can hear Ahri gulping.

As I stand here, not really knowing what to do, Ahri quietly puts her arm around Roa, gently hugging her.

Roa then grabs Ahri’s clothes.

I feel like I’m in the way, so I turn around and start examining the magic cloth Roa handed me.
